Pomelo (Citrus maxima) has been traditionally consumed in various Asian cultures for its purported health benefits, including cardiovascular support. Recent scientific studies have begun to explore pomelo's potential impact on lipid profiles, including triglyceride levels. Some research suggests that pomelo contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (notably naringin and hesperidin), vitamin C, and dietary fiber, which may contribute to lipid metabolism regulation.
Animal studies and a few small-scale human trials indicate that pomelo extract or juice can reduce serum triglyceride levels. The proposed mechanisms include improved lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, and anti-inflammatory effects. For example, a study published in the Journal of Medicinal Food (2012) found that rats fed a high-fat diet and supplemented with pomelo extract had significantly lower triglyceride levels than controls. Another small clinical trial from China reported modest triglyceride reductions in hyperlipidemic subjects consuming pomelo juice daily for eight weeks.
However, the current evidence base is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and a lack of standardized preparations. Larger, well-controlled human clinical trials are necessary to confirm these preliminary findings. Thus, while there is some scientific foundation for pomelo's use in supporting healthy triglyceride levels, the evidence is not robust enough for strong recommendations at this time.
