L-taurine is an amino sulfonic acid that has been studied for its potential lipid-lowering effects, including its impact on triglyceride levels. Several animal and human studies have explored this connection. Mechanistically, taurine is thought to influence lipid metabolism by enhancing bile acid conjugation, improving hepatic cholesterol clearance, and modulating enzymes involved in lipid synthesis and breakdown. Some research has shown that supplemental taurine can decrease serum triglycerides in animal models of hyperlipidemia. In humans, a few small clinical studies have reported modest reductions in triglyceride levels with taurine supplementation, particularly in individuals with elevated baseline levels or metabolic syndrome.
However, the overall body of evidence is limited, and results are inconsistent across studies. Most clinical trials have been small, short-term, and not always well-controlled. The reductions in triglycerides observed are generally modest, and there is not yet enough high-quality evidence to establish taurine as a primary or adjunctive therapy for hypertriglyceridemia. Major clinical guidelines do not currently recommend taurine for the treatment of high triglycerides. Nevertheless, its safety profile appears good at commonly used doses, and ongoing research may further clarify its role. In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting taurine’s use for elevated triglycerides, it is not robust, and the clinical significance is still uncertain.
