Glucomannan is a soluble dietary fiber derived from the root of the konjac plant (Amorphophallus konjac). Its potential to lower triglyceride levels is supported by several clinical studies. Glucomannan works primarily by delaying gastric emptying and reducing the absorption of dietary fat and cholesterol in the intestines, which can help decrease circulating lipid levels, including triglycerides.

A number of randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have evaluated glucomannan’s effects on lipid profiles. For example, a 2008 meta-analysis published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that glucomannan supplementation led to significant reductions in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides in both adults and children with elevated lipid levels. The mechanisms proposed include increased fecal excretion of bile acids and cholesterol, and modulation of lipid metabolism by the gut microbiota due to the fermentable nature of glucomannan.

While evidence is not as strong as for prescription lipid-lowering medications, the available data suggest glucomannan is a reasonable adjunct therapy for mildly elevated triglycerides, especially in the context of dietary and lifestyle modifications. The overall quality of evidence is moderate, with most studies showing modest but statistically significant effects, justifying a score of 3 out of 5.

Glucomannan is generally well tolerated, but should be taken with plenty of water to avoid gastrointestinal obstruction. It is important to consult with a healthcare provider before starting supplementation, especially for individuals on other lipid-lowering medications.
