Evidence supporting the use of: Aloe vera
For the health condition: Tooth Extraction
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Aloe vera has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting healing after tooth extraction, and there is a growing body of scientific evidence to justify its use. The plant is well-known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, attributed mainly to compounds such as acemannan, vitamins, and polysaccharides. Several clinical studies and laboratory experiments have evaluated the effects of aloe vera gel applied topically to extraction sites in the oral cavity. Results suggest aloe vera can reduce postoperative pain, swelling, and the risk of infection, as well as promote faster wound closure and epithelialization. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that patients treated with aloe vera gel after extraction reported less discomfort and demonstrated improved healing compared to controls.
Aloe vera’s antimicrobial effects may help prevent complications such as alveolar osteitis ("dry socket"), and its ability to modulate inflammation can contribute to reduced swelling and better tissue regeneration. However, while the evidence is promising, it is not yet conclusive; larger, high-quality studies are needed to confirm efficacy and establish standardized protocols for use. Nevertheless, the current data support the adjunctive use of aloe vera in dental practice following tooth extraction, especially as a natural, well-tolerated option for enhancing oral wound healing.
