Evidence supporting the use of: Forskohlii root
For the body system: Thyroid Gland
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Coleus forskohlii root, commonly known as forskohlii, has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of purposes, including metabolic and cardiovascular support. Its main active compound, forskolin, is known to activate adenylate cyclase and increase levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) in cells, which can have widespread physiological effects. However, the traditional use of forskohlii specifically for supporting the thyroid gland is limited and not well-documented in classical Ayurvedic texts. There are occasional references to general “metabolic support,” which might indirectly be interpreted as supporting thyroid function, but direct references are scarce.
From a scientific perspective, there is minimal clinical evidence to support the use of forskohlii or forskolin for thyroid health in humans. A few animal studies suggest that forskolin may stimulate thyroid hormone release by increasing cAMP, but these findings have not been robustly confirmed in human trials. The majority of scientific and clinical research on forskohlii focuses on its effects on weight management, cardiovascular function, and respiratory conditions, rather than direct thyroid support.
In summary, while forskohlii has a long history of traditional use in some health contexts, its application for thyroid gland support is not strongly rooted in either tradition or science. The evidence for its effectiveness in supporting the thyroid gland is weak and primarily speculative.
