Evidence supporting the use of: Bauhinia Variegata
For the body system: Thyroid Gland
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bauhinia variegata, commonly known as Mountain Ebony or Kachnar, has a longstanding history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for supporting thyroid health, particularly in the management of goiter and hypothyroidism. Traditional texts and practitioners have cited the use of the bark, flowers, and leaves of Bauhinia variegata for their purported ability to regulate thyroid gland function and reduce glandular swellings. The plant is thought to possess anti-inflammatory and possibly mild thyromimetic properties, contributing to its use in folk remedies for thyroid disorders.
Scientific evidence supporting these traditional uses is limited but emerging. Some animal studies (e.g., Panda et al., 1999, Journal of Ethnopharmacology) have shown that extracts of Bauhinia variegata may exhibit thyroid-stimulating activity, leading to increased levels of thyroxine (T4) in rats. However, these studies are preliminary, with small sample sizes and lack of clinical trials in humans. As such, while there is a traditional basis for its use in thyroid health, robust scientific validation is lacking.
In summary, Bauhinia variegata is traditionally used for thyroid support, but current scientific evidence is limited and does not yet justify its widespread use based on clinical efficacy.
