Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) has some scientific basis for its use in supporting cognitive function, including symptoms described as "cloudy thinking" or brain fog, but the evidence is limited and not robust. Vitamin B6 is essential for neurotransmitter synthesis, including serotonin, dopamine, and GABA, all of which are involved in brain function and mood regulation. Deficiency in vitamin B6 can lead to neurological symptoms such as irritability, depression, confusion, and cognitive impairment. Some clinical studies have shown that individuals with low levels of B6 may experience cognitive difficulties, and supplementation can reverse these symptoms in deficient populations. However, for the general population without an identified deficiency, evidence that B6 supplementation improves cognitive clarity or reduces brain fog is weak. Most systematic reviews conclude that B6 supplementation does not significantly enhance cognitive performance in healthy individuals. It is primarily beneficial in populations at risk of deficiency, such as the elderly, people with malabsorption syndromes, or those on certain medications.
