Rating (out of 5): 3
Tongkat ali (Eurycoma longifolia) is an herbal remedy traditionally used in Southeast Asia for a variety of health conditions, including male virility and energy. In modern times, tongkat ali has gained popularity as a natural supplement purported to boost testosterone levels, especially in men with low testosterone (hypogonadism).
Scientific research on tongkat ali is growing, and several clinical studies have explored its effects on testosterone levels. Some randomized controlled trials and observational studies suggest that tongkat ali supplementation may lead to a moderate increase in total and free testosterone, particularly in men with low baseline levels or those experiencing stress-related reductions in testosterone. For example, a 2012 study published in the journal Andrologia found that daily supplementation with tongkat ali extract significantly improved testosterone levels and symptoms of hypogonadism in aging men. Another study showed benefits for stress hormone balance and improvements in libido and well-being.
However, while results are promising, the evidence base is still limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in extract standardization. Most studies report mild or no side effects, but long-term safety data are lacking. Overall, tongkat ali’s use for supporting testosterone is supported by both traditional use and emerging scientific evidence, but larger, high-quality trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
