Rating (out of 5): 3

Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) has a longstanding traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine as an aphrodisiac and male fertility enhancer, but its support for the testes and male reproductive system is also backed by several scientific studies. The primary bioactive component in velvet bean is L-DOPA, a precursor to dopamine, which plays a role in hormonal regulation. Preclinical and clinical studies have found that velvet bean supplementation can increase testosterone levels, improve sperm quality, and enhance libido in males. For example, a 2010 clinical trial published in "Fertility and Sterility" reported that infertile men who took velvet bean seed powder experienced significant improvements in sperm count and motility, as well as elevated testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels, compared to controls. Other studies have indicated antioxidant properties that may protect the testes from oxidative stress. However, while the evidence is promising and provides a plausible mechanism of action, the majority of clinical data comes from small-scale studies, and more robust, large-scale human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. In summary, the use of velvet bean to support the testes is justified by both traditional use and emerging scientific validation, with a moderate level of evidence supporting its application.
