For the body system: Testes
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
L-arginine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to nitric oxide, a molecule involved in vasodilation and blood flow. Scientific interest in L-arginine's effects on the testes primarily centers on its potential to support male sexual function, spermatogenesis, and fertility. Some clinical studies suggest that L-arginine supplementation may improve sperm count and motility in men with infertility issues, potentially by enhancing blood flow to the testes and supporting nitric oxide-mediated processes vital for erection and reproductive function. For example, a 1999 study (Scibona et al., Andrologia) found improvements in sperm motility in some men following L-arginine supplementation. Additionally, L-arginine is sometimes included in multi-ingredient supplements aimed at male reproductive health. However, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence remain modest, with many studies being small, uncontrolled, or showing only mild benefits. The evidence is stronger for L-arginine’s effects on erectile function rather than direct, robust support of testicular health or testosterone production. Thus, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting the use of L-arginine for aspects of testicular function, particularly related to fertility and blood flow, its efficacy is not strongly established and more rigorous research is needed.
