Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Skim milk is commonly associated with support for dental health, particularly due to its calcium and vitamin D content. Scientific evidence suggests that calcium is essential for the development and maintenance of strong teeth and bones. Skim milk, though lower in fat than whole milk, still provides significant amounts of calcium and, if fortified, vitamin D—both of which are well-documented to contribute to the mineralization of teeth and prevention of dental caries. The American Dental Association and other health authorities recognize dairy products, including skim milk, as beneficial for oral health due to their mineral content and their ability to help buffer acids in the mouth, reducing the risk of tooth decay.

However, it should be noted that while the minerals in skim milk support teeth, whole milk and other dairy products may provide slightly higher levels of fat-soluble vitamins. Skim milk generally does not contain added sugars, making it a preferable option over sweetened beverages. Several cohort and clinical studies have demonstrated that higher dietary calcium intake, particularly from dairy sources, is associated with improved dental health outcomes, especially in children and adolescents. Therefore, while not a cure-all, the scientific basis for using skim milk to support the teeth body system is robust.
