Evidence supporting the use of: Bee products
For the body system: Teeth
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bee products, such as propolis, honey, and royal jelly, have been used traditionally in oral health care practices for centuries. Historical records from various cultures document the use of honey and propolis in treating oral wounds, ulcers, and maintaining general oral hygiene. Propolis, in particular, has been valued for its antimicrobial properties, which can help reduce the bacterial load in the mouth and thus support dental health. Some in vitro and small-scale clinical studies have shown that propolis and honey may inhibit the growth of oral pathogens like Streptococcus mutans, which is associated with dental caries, and may help in reducing plaque formation and gingivitis. However, the bulk of evidence is derived from ethnomedicinal use and small studies, rather than large, high-quality clinical trials. While there is a growing interest in the scientific community regarding the potential benefits of bee products in oral health, current evidence is limited in scope and quality. Therefore, the support for bee products in promoting dental or oral health is primarily traditional, with limited but promising scientific evidence emerging. More rigorous research is needed to establish their efficacy and safety for this purpose.
