Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Kanna (Sceletium tortuosum) is a South African succulent traditionally used by indigenous peoples for mood enhancement and stress reduction. Scientifically, kanna contains alkaloids such as mesembrine, which are known to act as serotonin reuptake inhibitors and phosphodiesterase-4 inhibitors. Modern research suggests that these mechanisms may help modulate mood and reduce anxiety. Some small clinical studies and animal research have shown potential anxiolytic and mood-stabilizing effects, which could indirectly support the sympathetic nervous system by reducing stress-induced activation. However, direct evidence for kanna specifically supporting the sympathetic nervous system is limited. Most claims relate to emotional well-being and reduction of perceived stress rather than direct modulation of the autonomic system. Therefore, while there is some preliminary scientific support for kanna’s use in stress and mood management, which may have downstream effects on sympathetic activity, the evidence is still emerging and limited in scope and size. Larger clinical trials are needed to substantiate kanna's efficacy and clarify its impact on the sympathetic nervous system specifically.
