Polypodium leucotomos, a fern native to Central and South America, has been studied for its potential to support skin health and protect against sunburn. Scientific interest in Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE) began after observations of its traditional use for skin disorders. Over the past two decades, several clinical and preclinical studies have explored its photoprotective properties. Controlled trials in humans have demonstrated that oral supplementation with PLE can increase the minimal erythema dose (MED), which is the threshold for developing visible sunburn after UV exposure. For example, a study published in Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (2004) found that PLE supplementation significantly reduced UVB-induced erythema in healthy volunteers. Other studies have shown that PLE modulates immune responses, reduces oxidative stress, and helps preserve skin architecture following UV exposure. The active compounds in PLE, such as phenolic acids, are believed to contribute to these protective effects by neutralizing free radicals and inhibiting inflammation. However, the body of evidence is still limited, with most studies having small sample sizes and short durations. While there is reasonable scientific support for the use of Polypodium leucotomos extract as an adjunct to conventional sun protection methods, it should not be considered a substitute for sunscreen. Evidence for other unspecified species of Polypodium is lacking. Overall, the use of Polypodium leucotomos extract for sunburn protection is justified by moderate scientific evidence.
