Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Cissus quadrangularis has a long history of traditional use in Ayurveda and other traditional medicine systems for supporting bone health and healing fractures, which falls under the "structural system" of the body. More recently, scientific research has begun to validate some of these traditional claims. Several animal studies and a handful of small clinical trials have suggested that Cissus quadrangularis may help accelerate the healing of bone fractures, likely due to its content of anabolic steroidal substances, antioxidant compounds, and its ability to enhance osteoblast (bone-forming cell) activity. For example, a randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in the journal Phytotherapy Research (2008) found that supplementation with Cissus quadrangularis significantly reduced fracture healing time in adult male participants. Other studies have observed potential benefits in improving bone mineral density and promoting collagen synthesis. However, while promising, the overall quality and quantity of clinical data remain limited, with most studies being small, of short duration, or lacking rigorous controls. Thus, while there is some scientific validation supporting its use for bone health and the structural system, more large-scale, high-quality human studies are necessary to confirm these effects and determine optimal dosing and safety profiles.
