Evidence supporting the use of: Hops
For the health condition: Stress
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hops (Humulus lupulus) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for promoting relaxation and managing symptoms related to stress and anxiety. Traditionally, hops was used in “sleep pillows” and as a calming tea. Modern scientific research has begun to explore its effects on the central nervous system. Preclinical studies suggest that hops contains compounds, such as xanthohumol and humulone, that may modulate GABAergic activity in the brain, leading to sedative and anxiolytic effects.
Some small, randomized controlled trials have examined the efficacy of hops extracts, often in combination with other herbs like valerian, for reducing stress and improving sleep quality. These studies generally report modest benefits for subjective measures of stress and anxiety, though results are not always consistent. Isolated studies of hops alone are limited, and methodological weaknesses (small sample sizes, lack of blinding) lower the strength of the evidence. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses conclude that while there is some support for hops in managing stress and related symptoms, the overall quality of evidence is low to moderate, and more rigorous research is needed.
In summary, while traditional use is well-established and preliminary scientific data is promising, the current level of scientific validation for hops as a treatment for stress is moderate at best, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
