Fish protein, particularly hydrolyzed fish protein and fish-derived peptides, has been investigated in recent years for its potential effects on stress and mental well-being. Although fish protein is not traditionally used in folk medicine specifically for stress, scientific research has begun to explore its bioactive components—such as peptides, amino acids (like tryptophan), and omega-3 fatty acids—due to their roles in brain chemistry and stress modulation. Several preclinical studies and a few small human clinical trials suggest that fish protein hydrolysates may help modulate the stress response, possibly by influencing neurotransmitter levels (including serotonin and gamma-aminobutyric acid, or GABA), regulating cortisol, and reducing systemic inflammation. For example, a handful of clinical trials have found that supplementation with fish protein hydrolysate can lower perceived stress and improve sleep quality in healthy adults, though the sample sizes are usually small and effect sizes modest. The mechanism is likely linked to the presence of specific peptides that may cross the blood-brain barrier and exert anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects via GABAergic or serotonergic pathways. However, the current body of evidence is limited, and larger, high-quality clinical trials are needed for confirmation. Thus, while there is early scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting the use of fish protein for stress, the evidence is not robust, and the approach should be considered experimental at this stage.
