Evidence supporting the use of: Myoviridae
For the health condition: Staph Infections
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Myoviridae is a family of bacteriophages (viruses that infect bacteria) that has been scientifically investigated for the treatment of bacterial infections, including those caused by Staphylococcus aureus (Staph infections). The interest in Myoviridae-based phage therapy stems from their ability to specifically target and lyse pathogenic bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant strains such as MRSA. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that Myoviridae phages can effectively reduce or eliminate S. aureus populations both in vitro and in animal models. For example, phages from the Myoviridae family have been shown to clear infections in mouse models of staphylococcal skin and wound infections, and some case reports and compassionate use cases in humans have documented clinical improvement in otherwise refractory infections.
Clinical trials are ongoing, and while large-scale, double-blind clinical data are still limited, there is a growing body of peer-reviewed research supporting the safety and efficacy of Myoviridae phages against Staph infections. Regulatory agencies in some countries have also permitted the compassionate use of phage therapy for drug-resistant infections. Overall, the evidence supporting the use of Myoviridae phages for Staph infections is substantial and grounded in scientific research, though more robust clinical data are needed for widespread adoption.
