Hu Zhang (虎杖), also known as Polygonum cuspidatum or Japanese Knotweed, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Hu Zhang is primarily used to "clear heat," "remove toxicity," and "invigorate blood." Its use for supporting the Spleen system specifically is less prominent compared to its applications for conditions related to blood stasis, damp-heat, and detoxification. However, some classical TCM texts mention its use in formulas aimed at relieving dampness and supporting digestive function, which are loosely associated with Spleen health in TCM theory. There is very limited direct scientific evidence connecting Hu Zhang to Spleen support as understood in either TCM or biomedical terms. Most modern research focuses on its active compound resveratrol and its effects on cardiovascular health, inflammation, and oxidative stress, rather than Spleen-specific benefits. Therefore, its use for the Spleen is justified primarily by traditional usage, with only modest supporting evidence and little relevant modern scientific validation.
