Grape (Vitis vinifera) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is sometimes referenced as a food that can benefit the Spleen. In TCM, the Spleen is not identical to the anatomical organ recognized in Western medicine, but instead refers to a broader system related to digestion, transformation of food, and energy (Qi) generation. Grapes are considered to have a sweet flavor and neutral thermal nature, which in TCM theory is thought to "tonify Qi" and nourish the body fluids, thus supporting Spleen function. However, the references to grape specifically supporting the Spleen are not as prominent or specific as for other herbs and foods (such as yam, lotus seed, or Chinese dates). There is little direct scientific evidence from modern clinical trials or biomedical research supporting the use of grape to specifically support Spleen function as defined by either traditional or Western medicine. Most scientific studies of grape focus on cardiovascular, antioxidant, or metabolic effects. Thus, the primary justification for grape's use in this context is traditional, with modest or indirect evidence even within that system, and essentially no scientific validation in the context of the Spleen body system as understood in biomedicine.
