Evidence supporting the use of: Ganoderma applanatum
For the body system: Spleen
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ganoderma applanatum, also known as the artist’s conk, is a polypore mushroom used in traditional medicine systems, especially within East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this mushroom is grouped with other Ganoderma species (such as Ganoderma lucidum or Reishi) and is believed to support the Spleen system. In TCM, the Spleen is associated with digestion, nutrient absorption, and the generation of Qi (vital energy). Herbalists have historically used Ganoderma applanatum decoctions or extracts to "tonify the Spleen," which is a loosely defined concept involving improved digestive function and general vitality.
However, the evidence for these uses is largely traditional. There are a few scientific studies on Ganoderma applanatum, most of which focus on its polysaccharides and potential anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory effects, but these studies rarely address Spleen function specifically or use modern biomedical definitions. Most research is preliminary, in vitro, or in animal models, with little direct clinical evidence supporting its role in Spleen health or function as defined by either TCM or Western medicine.
Therefore, while Ganoderma applanatum has a long-standing traditional use for supporting the Spleen, scientific validation remains limited. The rating reflects the existence of tradition but a lack of robust scientific confirmation.
