In TCM, the spleen is viewed as central to digestion and the transformation of nutrients, and herbs containing flavonoid glycosides (such as those from Astragalus membranaceus or Scutellaria baicalensis) are often prescribed to "tonify" or strengthen the spleen. The use of these compounds is based on empirical observations and centuries-old practice, rather than on modern clinical evidence specifically targeting spleen function as understood in Western medicine.
From a scientific perspective, flavonoid glycosides are recognized for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties. However, direct studies examining their effects on the spleen as a discrete organ or body system in humans are lacking. Most research has focused on their broader effects on immune response and inflammation, sometimes using animal models or cell cultures.
