Euryale seed, also known as fox nut or "Qian Shi" (芡实) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has been used for centuries to support the Spleen body system. In TCM theory, the Spleen governs digestion and the transformation of nutrients, and its deficiency is thought to cause symptoms like poor appetite, fatigue, and loose stools. Euryale seed is classified as sweet, astringent, and neutral, and is believed to tonify the Spleen, stabilize the kidneys, and stop leakage (such as diarrhea). It is often included in classic formulas for Spleen Qi deficiency and associated symptoms. While Euryale seed’s use is well established in traditional Chinese herbal practice, modern scientific studies specifically validating its effect on the Spleen as defined in TCM are limited. Some pharmacological research has found Euryale seed to contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, polysaccharides, and phenolics, and there is preliminary evidence for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diarrheal properties in vitro and in animal models. However, these studies do not directly correlate to Spleen function as conceptualized in TCM, nor do they provide robust clinical trial data in humans. In summary, the justification for Euryale seed's support of the Spleen system is primarily rooted in tradition, with some early pharmacological findings suggesting potential supportive effects, but lacking strong scientific confirmation as defined by rigorous clinical research.
