Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) is a key herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is historically used to "tonify the Spleen" and support overall vitality. In the TCM framework, the "Spleen" refers not only to the anatomical organ but also to a functional system believed to govern digestion, nutrient assimilation, energy (Qi) production, and fluid metabolism. Astragalus is classified as a "Qi tonic" and is commonly included in formulas addressing fatigue, poor appetite, and digestive weakness, all attributed to Spleen Qi deficiency in TCM theory. The traditional use of astragalus to support the Spleen is well-documented in classical texts and remains widespread in modern herbal practice.

From a scientific perspective, studies on astragalus have largely focused on its immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Some clinical and preclinical research suggests astragalus extracts may benefit immune function and support general health, but these studies typically do not reference the "Spleen" as defined in TCM. There is limited or no direct scientific evidence linking astragalus use to support of the anatomical spleen or to digestive function in the Western biomedical sense.
