Lactobacillus gasseri is a probiotic bacterium that naturally inhabits the human gastrointestinal tract, including the small intestine. It has been studied for its potential role in supporting digestive health, particularly in relation to the small intestine. Scientific investigations suggest that L. gasseri may help maintain intestinal barrier function, modulate the immune response, and compete with pathogenic bacteria for adhesion sites, which could theoretically support small intestinal health. Some studies have observed that supplementation with L. gasseri may reduce symptoms associated with certain digestive disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), though the evidence is not robust and is often limited to small-scale or short-term trials.
While there is some mechanistic and clinical research supporting the use of L. gasseri for gut health, the quality and quantity of evidence specifically relating to the small intestine is limited, and results are sometimes inconsistent. Larger, well-controlled human trials are needed to clarify its benefits for small intestinal health in particular.
