Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is a major class of antibody found in blood and extracellular fluid, playing a key role in the body’s immune defense. There is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting the use of orally administered immunoglobulins—including IgG derived from serum or bovine colostrum—to support gastrointestinal health, particularly in the context of the small intestine. Orally administered IgG is not significantly absorbed into the bloodstream; rather, it acts locally within the gut lumen. Research shows that IgG can bind bacterial toxins and antigens, neutralizing pathogens and preventing their attachment to the intestinal mucosa. Several studies have examined serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin/protein isolates (SBI) as a medical food in conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), demonstrating improvements in symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and gut barrier function (Petschow et al., 2015). Additionally, clinical trials have found that IgG supplementation may reduce gut inflammation and permeability, supporting the mucosal immune system. However, while these findings are promising, they are not universally conclusive and some questions remain regarding optimal dosing, long-term safety, and applicability across diverse patient populations. Overall, the use of IgG to support the small intestine is supported by moderate scientific evidence, particularly for certain gut-related disorders, but more large-scale, independent trials are needed to solidify its place in gastrointestinal therapy.
