Digestion resistant maltodextrin (DRM), also known as resistant maltodextrin, is a soluble dietary fiber that resists digestion in the small intestine and reaches the large intestine largely intact. Its primary function in relation to the small intestine is not direct nutrient absorption, but rather its prebiotic effects and influence on gut health. Several scientific studies have demonstrated that DRM can modulate gut microbiota, increase the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids, and improve stool frequency and consistency. These effects are primarily due to its fermentation by colonic bacteria, but some benefits may begin in the small intestine, such as slowing glucose absorption and moderating postprandial blood sugar spikes by increasing chyme viscosity and delaying gastric emptying. Clinical trials have shown that DRM can improve markers of gut health, including reducing symptoms of constipation, supporting regularity, and promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. The FDA recognizes DRM as a dietary fiber, and it is commonly used in functional foods for its digestive health benefits. While the primary site of DRM's action is the colon, the overall evidence base supports its use for general digestive health, which involves both the small and large intestines. Thus, its use to support the small intestine is justified by scientific evidence, although the most robust effects are observed in the large intestine.
