Evidence supporting the use of: Argan tree
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
The Argan tree (Argania spinosa), native to Morocco, produces argan oil, which has been traditionally used for centuries for skin care, particularly to treat dry and flaky skin. In recent years, scientific studies have begun to validate these traditional uses. Argan oil is rich in fatty acids (especially oleic and linoleic acids), tocopherols (vitamin E), and other antioxidants, which contribute to its moisturizing and skin-protective properties.
Clinical and laboratory studies have shown that argan oil can improve skin hydration by restoring the barrier function of the skin and reducing transepidermal water loss. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Clinical Interventions in Aging (2015) found that both oral and topical application of argan oil improved skin elasticity and hydration in postmenopausal women. Other studies report anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that can help soothe irritated, flaky skin.
While the number of rigorous human trials is still somewhat limited, the available evidence supports the traditional use of argan oil for dry and flaky skin. The mechanisms are attributed mainly to its high content of essential fatty acids and vitamin E, which help maintain the skin barrier and protect against environmental damage.
