Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

L-histidine, an essential amino acid, has some scientific basis for its use in skin care, although the evidence remains limited and mostly preliminary. Histidine plays a crucial role in protein synthesis and is a precursor for histamine, which is involved in immune responses and skin barrier function. Some scientific interest has focused on its ability to support the skin’s natural barrier and hydration mechanisms. For example, studies have demonstrated that topical or oral supplementation with certain amino acids, including histidine, may improve the integrity of the skin barrier, which is particularly relevant in conditions like atopic dermatitis. Research published in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology (2017) found that oral L-histidine supplementation reduced symptoms and improved skin barrier function in children with atopic dermatitis. Histidine is also a component of filaggrin, a protein essential for skin barrier health.

However, while these findings are promising, most clinical trials have focused on specific skin conditions like eczema rather than general skin care. There is not yet robust evidence to support widespread use of L-histidine specifically for general skin health in the absence of a diagnosed deficiency or skin disorder. Thus, while scientific rationale and some early clinical results exist, the overall strength of evidence is still modest and further research is needed before it can be considered a mainstream skin care supplement for the general population.
