Evidence supporting the use of: Shellfish Exoskeleton
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Shellfish exoskeletons are a primary source of chitin and its derivative, chitosan. These substances are commonly used in supplements intended to support joint and bone health, often in the form of glucosamine and chondroitin, which are extracted from shellfish exoskeletons. Scientific studies have investigated glucosamine and chondroitin for their potential benefits in managing symptoms of osteoarthritis and supporting joint function. Some randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses suggest modest improvements in pain and function in osteoarthritis patients, particularly with glucosamine sulfate. However, the overall evidence is mixed, with some studies showing little to no significant benefit compared to placebo. Importantly, these supplements do not rebuild bone or cartilage but may help reduce symptoms in some individuals.
There is less direct evidence for shellfish exoskeleton-derived compounds supporting the skeletal system (bones) in healthy individuals or for preventing bone-related conditions such as osteoporosis. Most scientific focus has been on joint health rather than bone density or strength. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation for the use of shellfish exoskeleton-derived supplements in supporting joint health (a component of the skeletal system), the evidence for direct effects on bone health is limited. Users should also be mindful of shellfish allergies when considering such supplements.
