Evidence supporting the use of: Phosphate Salt
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Phosphate salts are scientifically recognized as essential minerals for human health, particularly for the skeletal system. Phosphorus, provided in the form of phosphate, is the second most abundant mineral in the body and about 85% of it is found in bones and teeth as hydroxyapatite crystals, alongside calcium. These crystals confer strength and structural integrity to the skeletal system. The role of phosphate in bone health is well established in medical and nutritional literature. Deficiency in phosphate (hypophosphatemia) can lead to bone pain, weakness, and in severe cases, osteomalacia (softening of the bones) in adults and rickets in children. Supplementation with phosphate salts may be medically indicated in individuals with documented phosphate deficiency or imbalances, such as those with certain kidney disorders, malabsorption syndromes, or inherited hypophosphatemic conditions. However, for the general population with normal renal function and adequate dietary intake, extra phosphate supplementation is not typically necessary for bone health, as dietary phosphorus is abundant in many foods. Excessive phosphate intake can even be harmful, especially in those with kidney disease, potentially leading to vascular calcification and other complications. In summary, there is solid scientific evidence that phosphate is critical for bone health, but routine supplementation with phosphate salts for skeletal support is only warranted in specific cases of deficiency or medical need.
