Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hu Zhang (虎杖), also known as Polygonum cuspidatum or Japanese knotweed, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for promoting bone health and supporting the skeletal system. In TCM, Hu Zhang is believed to "invigorate blood," "dispel wind-dampness," and "clear heat," which are traditional concepts sometimes associated with supporting bone and joint health. Its use for skeletal support is primarily based on these traditional frameworks rather than modern biomedical evidence.

There is limited scientific research directly linking Hu Zhang or its primary constituent, resveratrol, to improved bone health or the treatment of skeletal disorders in humans. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that resveratrol may promote osteoblast differentiation and inhibit osteoclast activity, potentially benefiting bone metabolism. However, clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the evidence remains preliminary. Therefore, the main justification for using Hu Zhang to support the skeletal system is traditional, and the scientific evidence is insufficient to strongly validate its efficacy for this purpose.
