Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bovine collagen is increasingly used as a supplement to support bone health due to its role as a primary structural protein in bones. Collagen constitutes approximately 90% of the organic matrix of bone, providing a scaffold for mineralization and contributing to bone strength and flexibility. Scientific studies have investigated the effects of bovine collagen peptides on bone metabolism. Several randomized controlled trials and animal studies have shown that oral supplementation with collagen peptides may enhance bone mineral density and stimulate the synthesis of bone-forming cells (osteoblasts), while reducing the activity of bone-resorbing cells (osteoclasts). For example, a 2018 randomized controlled trial published in Nutrients reported that postmenopausal women taking collagen peptides had improvements in bone mineral density compared to a placebo group. Proposed mechanisms include the stimulation of collagen synthesis in bone tissue and the provision of amino acids necessary for bone matrix formation. However, while these findings are promising, more large-scale and long-term human studies are needed to fully establish efficacy, and collagen supplementation should be considered as part of a broader strategy for bone health, including adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, and regular weight-bearing exercise.
