Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Boswellic acids, the active compounds found in the resin of the Boswellia serrata tree (also known as Indian frankincense), have been studied for their anti-inflammatory properties, which are relevant to skeletal system health, particularly in conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Scientific research, including several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses, indicates that Boswellia extracts can reduce pain and improve function in people with osteoarthritis, primarily by inhibiting pro-inflammatory enzymes such as 5-lipoxygenase. A 2019 meta-analysis in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine highlighted that Boswellia was associated with significant improvement in pain and physical function compared to placebo in knee osteoarthritis patients.

However, the evidence is not as strong in terms of direct effects on bone density or the prevention of bone loss. Most of the benefits are attributed to symptom management (pain and inflammation) rather than altering the underlying skeletal structure. Safety profiles are generally favorable, with few serious adverse effects reported in short-term studies.

In summary, Boswellic acids have scientific support for helping manage inflammatory joint conditions, which are closely related to the skeletal system’s health, but there is limited evidence for direct effects on bone strength or growth. Therefore, its use is best justified for symptom relief in joint disorders rather than as a bone-strengthening supplement.
