Rating (out of 5): 2

Radish (Raphanus sativus) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for supporting respiratory health, including the sinuses. In these traditions, radish is valued for its pungency and considered beneficial for clearing mucus and promoting drainage from the nasal passages and sinuses. The root is sometimes used in decoctions or as a food remedy to ease congestion and help with conditions such as sinusitis or the common cold.

From a scientific standpoint, there is limited direct research on radish specifically for sinus health. Radish contains compounds such as glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, which have demonstrated antimicrobial properties in some studies. These properties could theoretically help with infections that contribute to sinus issues, but direct clinical evidence is lacking. Additionally, radish has mild expectorant qualities, which may help thin mucus. However, most of the support for radish’s use in sinus health is based on its traditional use rather than robust clinical data. As such, while some mechanistic rationale and historical precedent exist, there is insufficient high-quality scientific evidence to strongly validate radish as an effective remedy for sinus support.
