Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Pinellia ternata (commonly known as Ban Xia in Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM) has a long history of use for conditions related to the respiratory tract, including the sinuses. In TCM, Ban Xia is traditionally used to "transform phlegm" and "dry dampness," which, in the TCM framework, translates to alleviating symptoms such as nasal congestion, sinus pressure, and excessive mucus production. It is a key component in several classical herbal formulas, such as Er Chen Tang and Xiao Qing Long Tang, which are prescribed for respiratory and sinus complaints. However, the use of Pinellia ternata in this context is based primarily on centuries of empirical clinical experience and TCM theory rather than on modern scientific validation. While a few contemporary studies have investigated its anti-inflammatory and antiemetic properties, there is a lack of robust clinical trials directly examining its efficacy for sinus-related disorders as understood in Western medicine. Most available evidence supporting its use for the sinuses thus remains traditional, with moderate indirect support from preliminary pharmacological studies. Therefore, while its use for supporting the sinuses is well-established in TCM, it is not strongly substantiated by modern clinical science.
