Evidence supporting the use of: Nasturtium
For the body system: Sinuses
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) has a history of traditional use for supporting the respiratory system, including the sinuses. In European herbal medicine, especially in Germany, nasturtium is often paired with horseradish and used in phytotherapeutic preparations for upper respiratory tract infections. This tradition is based in part on the plant's content of mustard oil glycosides (glucosinolates), which are believed to possess mild antimicrobial properties. Some small clinical studies and in vitro experiments have shown that nasturtium extracts can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and viruses that are common culprits in sinus and respiratory infections. However, robust, large-scale clinical trials specific to sinus health are lacking, and most of the evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. While nasturtium does appear in some herbal formulas aimed at sinus and respiratory support, the degree of scientific support for these uses is limited. The German Commission E has approved nasturtium (often in combination with horseradish) for supportive treatment of acute catarrh of the respiratory tract, which may indirectly relate to sinus support. Nevertheless, more rigorous research is needed to confirm its efficacy specifically for sinus health.
