Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Mucilage is a gelatinous substance produced by many plants, such as slippery elm, marshmallow root, and licorice. Traditionally, mucilaginous herbs have been used to support respiratory and sinus health, particularly in herbal medicine systems such as Traditional Western Herbalism and Ayurveda. The primary rationale is that mucilage soothes and coats mucous membranes, which can become irritated during sinus infections or allergies. By forming a protective layer, mucilage is believed to reduce irritation, ease discomfort, and promote healing of the upper respiratory tract, including the sinuses. However, while these uses are well-documented in traditional texts and herbal formularies, scientific evidence specifically supporting mucilage’s benefits for the sinuses is limited. Most available scientific studies focus on mucilage’s general demulcent (soothing) effects on mucous membranes, rather than specific clinical outcomes for sinus health. Animal studies and in vitro assays may demonstrate reduced inflammation or irritation, but high-quality clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while the traditional use of mucilage for sinus support is well established, modern scientific validation remains limited, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
