Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

The use of "Lung" (often referring to animal lung tissue, such as bovine or porcine lung, or herbal remedies associated with the lung in Traditional Chinese Medicine) to support the sinuses is primarily rooted in traditional practices rather than scientific validation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the lung is considered to govern the respiratory system, which includes both the lungs themselves and the upper respiratory tract, including the sinuses. TCM theory posits that healthy lung function helps to keep the nasal passages clear and prevents the accumulation of phlegm or dampness that can lead to sinus congestion. Remedies targeting the lung are commonly employed to treat sinus issues like congestion, runny nose, or sinusitis within this framework. However, there is limited direct scientific evidence to support the use of animal lung extracts or TCM lung tonics specifically for sinus health. Some animal studies and preliminary clinical reports have explored the benefits of animal organotherapy (consuming organ tissue to support the corresponding human organ), but robust human clinical trials are lacking. The traditional link between lung health and sinus health remains widely used in TCM and some holistic health circles, but the evidence is mainly anecdotal or based on centuries of empirical use rather than modern biomedical research. Therefore, the justification is primarily traditional, with a modest evidence rating.
