Evidence supporting the use of: Lemon Myrtle
For the body system: Sinuses
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) has a long history of use in Australian Aboriginal traditional medicine, where it was valued for its aromatic leaves. Traditionally, Lemon Myrtle was used in steam inhalations and infusions to help relieve symptoms of colds, congestion, and sinus issues. The high concentration of citral (an essential oil compound) in its leaves is believed to contribute to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help soothe the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and sinuses.
However, while there is some research demonstrating Lemon Myrtle’s antimicrobial activity—particularly against bacteria and fungi—direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for sinus health or treatment of sinusitis is limited. Most contemporary uses for sinus support are extrapolated from its traditional use and its general antimicrobial effects, rather than from well-designed clinical trials in humans.
In summary, Lemon Myrtle’s use for supporting the sinus system is primarily based on traditional practices, with a modest but growing body of laboratory evidence supporting its potential. It is not yet validated by strong clinical research for this particular body system.
