Evidence supporting the use of: Sargassum
For the health condition: Sinus Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sargassum, a type of brown seaweed, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other East Asian traditional practices. In TCM, Sargassum (known as Hai Zao) is often included in herbal formulas for conditions described as "phlegm-heat" or to "soften hardness," which can include symptoms such as nasal congestion and sinus issues. The rationale is based on traditional theories of balancing bodily energies and clearing phlegm from the respiratory passages. However, there is limited to no robust modern clinical evidence specifically supporting the efficacy of Sargassum for treating sinus infections (rhinosinusitis). While Sargassum contains bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides and fucoidan, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in laboratory studies, these findings have not been directly linked to the treatment of sinus infections in clinical trials. Thus, its use for sinus infection is primarily justified by tradition, with little scientific validation or high-quality human studies to support its effectiveness for this specific condition.
