Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) is a well-known herb in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is primarily used as a "medhya rasayana"—an herb that supports the mind, intellect, and nervous system. Historically, Shankhpushpi has been used to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and improve memory and cognitive function. These traditional uses suggest a role in balancing neurotransmitters, including serotonin, although the explicit connection to the "serotonin body system" is not directly stated in classical texts.

Modern research on Shankhpushpi is limited but does indicate some neuropharmacological activity. Preclinical studies in animals suggest anxiolytic, antidepressant, and cognition-enhancing effects, possibly mediated by modulation of monoamine levels (including serotonin) in the brain. However, these studies are preliminary and mostly conducted in rodents. There is a lack of robust, well-controlled clinical trials in humans directly measuring serotonin levels or related endpoints after Shankhpushpi administration. In summary, the use of Shankhpushpi to support serotonin-related body systems is largely justified by traditional Ayurvedic practice, with some supportive but limited preclinical scientific evidence. It is not yet validated by large-scale human studies.
