Aloe vera has been traditionally used for centuries to treat minor wounds, scratches, and abrasions, but its application is also supported by a growing body of scientific evidence. The gel from the Aloe vera plant contains bioactive compounds such as polysaccharides, glycoproteins, vitamins, and minerals that contribute to its healing properties. Several laboratory and clinical studies have demonstrated that Aloe vera can enhance wound healing by promoting collagen synthesis, increasing the rate of epithelialization, and exerting anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. For example, a review published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2015) concluded that Aloe vera gel significantly accelerates healing in minor wounds in both animal models and humans. Another clinical trial reported in the Annals of Plastic Surgery (2009) found that topical Aloe vera reduced healing time of skin wounds compared to standard treatments. Despite these findings, not all studies have found Aloe vera to be more effective than placebo or conventional treatments, and results can vary based on the formulation and severity of the abrasion. Overall, while traditional use is robust and scientific evidence is moderate, Aloe vera is generally considered a safe and potentially beneficial adjunct for supporting the healing of minor scratches and abrasions.
