Evidence supporting the use of: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum
For the health condition: Rhinitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly known as Lactobacillus plantarum) has some emerging scientific evidence supporting its use in the management of rhinitis, particularly allergic rhinitis. Several small-scale clinical studies and preclinical experiments have examined the role of L. plantarum as a probiotic in modulating immune responses relevant to rhinitis. The proposed mechanism involves the modulation of the gut and nasal mucosal immune system, potentially reducing inflammation and allergic responses by shifting the Th1/Th2 balance and increasing regulatory T-cell activity.
A few randomized controlled trials have investigated the effects of L. plantarum supplementation in individuals with allergic rhinitis. For example, one study found that oral administration of L. plantarum improved symptoms and quality of life in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis, and reduced levels of inflammatory markers such as IL-5 and IL-13. Animal studies have similarly shown that L. plantarum can decrease nasal eosinophil infiltration and IgE levels in models of allergic rhinitis.
However, the number of high-quality human studies remains limited, and most trials to date have been small in size, sometimes combining L. plantarum with other probiotic strains, making it difficult to determine its independent effect. While the mechanistic rationale is sound and preliminary data are promising, larger and more robust clinical trials are needed before L. plantarum can be definitively recommended for rhinitis. Current evidence justifies a rating of 2 out of 5.
