Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium bifidum
For the health condition: Rhinitis, Allergic
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
There is limited but emerging scientific evidence suggesting that Bifidobacterium bifidum may support the management of allergic rhinitis. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the effects of various probiotic strains, including B. bifidum, on allergic rhinitis symptoms. The proposed mechanism is modulation of the immune response, specifically shifting the balance from a Th2-dominant (allergy-promoting) response to a more balanced Th1/Th2 profile, and enhancing regulatory T cell activity.
For example, a 2018 double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (Yoshida et al.) showed that supplementation with B. bifidum G9-1 reduced nasal and ocular symptoms in patients with Japanese cedar pollinosis. Other studies have demonstrated that multi-strain probiotics containing B. bifidum can reduce symptom severity and improve quality of life in individuals with allergic rhinitis, although it is often difficult to isolate the effect of this specific strain.
Despite these promising results, most studies are small and heterogeneous in terms of probiotic strains, dosages, and patient populations. Meta-analyses (e.g., Wei et al., 2022; Wang et al., 2016) indicate possible benefits but also highlight the need for larger, high-quality trials focusing specifically on B. bifidum. Therefore, the evidence is rated as 2—suggestive but not conclusive, with scientific validation that is preliminary and requires further confirmation.
