Vitamin E (commonly as alpha-tocopherol, though "alpha-tocopheryl hydrochloride" is uncommon in supplements) has been studied for its role in supporting reproductive health. Its use in this context is justified by both scientific and historical evidence, though the strength of evidence is moderate and not definitive.
Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that protects cell membranes from oxidative damage. In the reproductive system, oxidative stress can negatively impact gamete quality, fertility, and pregnancy outcomes. Some early studies in animals demonstrated that Vitamin E deficiency led to infertility and reproductive dysfunction, which is partly why it was historically called the "antisterility vitamin." In humans, small clinical trials and observational studies have suggested that supplementation may improve certain aspects of male fertility, particularly sperm motility and quality, presumably by reducing oxidative stress. There is also some evidence for its use in women with specific fertility issues, although large, well-controlled clinical trials are lacking.
While Vitamin E plays a physiological role in reproductive health and there is a plausible mechanism for benefit, the overall quality and quantity of human evidence is limited, especially regarding significant improvements in fertility or reproductive outcomes. As such, scientific validation exists but is not robust, and routine use for reproductive support is not universally recommended outside of deficiency or specific clinical indications.
