For the body system: Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Vitamin B refers to a group of water-soluble vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9, B12) that play critical roles in cellular metabolism and energy production. There is scientific evidence that certain B vitamins, particularly B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folate), and B12 (cobalamin), are important for reproductive health in both males and females. Folate is well-established as essential for fetal neural tube development, and folic acid supplementation is recommended for women of childbearing age to prevent neural tube defects during pregnancy. Vitamin B12 deficiency in women has also been linked to infertility and adverse pregnancy outcomes. In men, B vitamins are involved in sperm development and motility; deficiencies in B12, for example, have been associated with reduced sperm count and motility. Furthermore, B6 is important for the regulation of homocysteine levels, which when elevated, can negatively affect fertility outcomes. While the evidence is strongest for folate and B12 in supporting reproductive health, other B vitamins contribute indirectly through their roles in hormonal balance and cellular energy production. Overall, the use of vitamin B for supporting the reproductive system is underpinned by moderate scientific evidence, particularly regarding fertility and early fetal development.
