Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Unsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, have scientific evidence supporting their role in reproductive system health. Research has shown that these fatty acids are important components of cell membranes, including those of reproductive cells such as sperm and oocytes. Omega-3 fatty acids (such as EPA and DHA) are linked to improved sperm quality in males, including motility and morphology, and may also play a role in female fertility by supporting hormone production, follicular development, and endometrial receptivity.

Clinical studies have found associations between diets rich in unsaturated fatty acids and improved reproductive outcomes, such as higher pregnancy rates and reduced risk of certain reproductive disorders. For example, supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to benefit women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) by improving insulin sensitivity and potentially regulating menstrual cycles. In males, diets high in polyunsaturated fatty acids correlate with better semen quality.

Despite this, evidence is moderate rather than strong, as many findings are based on observational studies or relatively small clinical trials. Not all studies show consistent benefits, and more large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm causality and clarify mechanisms. However, the existing body of research does provide scientific rationale for the inclusion of unsaturated fatty acids to support reproductive system health.
