Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Royal jelly has been used traditionally, particularly in Asian and European folk medicine, as a tonic to support fertility and the reproductive system. The rationale behind its use stems from its role in bee biology: royal jelly is the exclusive food of queen bees, who are highly fertile and live much longer than worker bees. This observation has inspired the belief that royal jelly can promote reproductive health and vitality in humans. In traditional practices, royal jelly is sometimes recommended to support hormonal balance, menstrual health, and overall reproductive function in both men and women.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of royal jelly for reproductive health in humans is limited and of low quality. A few small animal studies suggest possible effects on hormone levels or ovarian function, but these findings have not been robustly replicated in humans. Some preliminary clinical trials have explored royal jelly’s impact on menopausal symptoms or sperm quality, with mixed or inconclusive results. Overall, while royal jelly continues to be used for reproductive support in traditional contexts, there is insufficient scientific validation to strongly endorse its effectiveness for this purpose.
