Sennosides are a group of compounds derived from the senna plant (Cassia species) and are well-established as stimulant laxatives. Their primary mechanism of action involves stimulating peristalsis and increasing water content in the intestines, which facilitates the passage of stool. Sennosides are specifically indicated for the short-term relief of constipation and for bowel evacuation before diagnostic procedures involving the colon and rectum.
Multiple clinical studies and systematic reviews have demonstrated the efficacy of sennosides in increasing bowel movement frequency and improving symptoms of constipation. They are included in numerous pharmacopoeias and treatment guidelines worldwide, such as those from the World Health Organization and the American Gastroenterological Association. Sennosides act directly on the colon, and their effect on the rectum is indirect, primarily by promoting the movement of stool into the rectal vault and stimulating defecation.
The use of sennosides is scientifically validated and supported for the management of constipation, which is a functional condition of the lower gastrointestinal tract, including the rectum. However, they are not used to treat structural diseases of the rectum itself (e.g., tumors, fissures), but rather to facilitate normal bowel elimination. Adverse effects are generally mild but may include abdominal cramps and, with prolonged use, the risk of dependency or electrolyte imbalance. Overall, sennosides are a scientifically validated ingredient for supporting rectal evacuation via their laxative action.
